Unlike calculators that alter lens power for physical positioning or frame sizes, this tool performs a purely mathematical conversion. An astigmatic lens has two primary power meridians. Because of this, any given prescription can be written in two completely different ways that mean the exact same thing. Ophthalmologists traditionally write prescriptions using plus (+) cylinder notation, whereas optometrists and automated lab surfacing equipment standardly use minus (-) cylinder notation.

To seamlessly translate between these two languages, the calculator automates a standard three-step algebraic formula:

  • Combine Sphere and Cylinder: It algebraically adds the sphere power and the cylinder power together to determine the new sphere power.
  • Flip the Cylinder Sign: It changes the sign of the cylinder power to its exact mathematical opposite.
  • Rotate the Axis by 90°: It changes the orientation of the axis by exactly 90 degrees to find its perpendicular counterpart (adding 90 if the angle is 90 or less, or subtracting 90 if it is greater than 90).
