Photophobia
What is Photophobia?
Despite the name, photophobia is not a fear of light. Although, to be honest, it can feel that way if you suffer from it. Photophobia is, in basic terms, an increased sensitivity to light that causes pain or discomfort in the eyes. That pain and discomfort can range anywhere from annoying to flat out debilitating.
Interestingly, photophobia is not an actual visual issue in and of itself. Rather, it’s a symptom of another underlying condition. This can make it a challenging issue to address and solve for.
What It’s Like Living With Photophobia
Regardless of the cause of your patient’s photophobia, it’s very important to understand how it can significantly impact their daily life. For those who suffer from it, it’s a constant battle to carefully control their light exposure; often avoiding triggering environments and seeking out dimly lit spaces to provide some sort of relief from the associated symptoms.
Depending on the severity and the cause, photophobia can range from being a low-grade annoyance to a life-disrupting nightmare. It can leave your eyes feeling painfully strained, irritated or like they are burning when exposed to bright lights, sunlight or certain types of artificial lighting (like fluorescent bulbs). It can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, vertigo and can even create a temporary vision impairment (like seeing spots, halos, or having double vision). Not surprisingly, it can make it very difficult and uncomfortable to watch tv, stare at a computer screen or even read a book.
Imagine having to live your life in constant anxiety that sunlight, overhead lighting, a camera flash or any other bright light is potentially going to cause you agony. Certainly not ideal, to put it mildly.
There are many reasons someone might experience photophobia, such as:
- Eye conditions and diseases such as dry eyes, corneal abrasion, scleritis, uveitis, retinitis pigmentosa, conjunctivitis, iritis, cataracts or keratitis
- Neurological disorders such as migraines, tumors, supranuclear palsy, blepharospasm or a traumatic brain injury
- Bacterial infection like meningitis
Photophobia can be the result of something as simple as an irritating contact lens that causes general eye inflammation. It can be caused by psychiatric disorders like anxiety and depression. It can even be caused by some medications, such as antibiotics, furosemide, and quinine. The three most common culprits though are migraines, dry eyes and corneal neuropathy.
Given there is no one-size-fits-all cause of photophobia, there is also no one-size-fits-all solution. You have to figure out what is causing it before you attempt to address it.
Once you’ve identified the root cause of the photophobia and/or what it’s associated with, you can move on to figuring out a solution. That’s where we come in. We offer years of experience and a variety of diagnostic kits that can help you alleviate symptoms of photophobia for your patient.
If the root cause is migraines, check out our dedicated migraine page for more in-depth information and migraine-specific solutions.
