MAGNA-5 EVALUATION KIT

In low vision, even a small improvement can make a big difference. The Magna-5 system is comprised of several components that, when combined and evaluated, may provide a subtle yet meaningful boost in visual acuity for your patient.

WHAT IS THE MAGNA-5 SYSTEM?

THE 3 COMPONENTS OF THE MAGNA-5 SYSTEM

The Magna-5 System has 3 components:

  • 5% Magnification: It’s a small change that can make a huge difference to anyone’s vision.
  • Prism Options: You can choose base up, base down, or no prism to see if shifting the light away from the center of the retina helps the patient use their remaining vision better.
  • Contrast and Glare Filters: These filters (set at 450nm and 527nm) are designed to enhance contrast and reduce glare. They can also be customized or paired with your favorite low vision filters.

These options can be mixed and matched in the Magna-5 Evaluation Kit to find the best way to improve your patient’s vision.

WHO IS THE MAGNA-5 FOR?

That’s up to you and the needs of your patient.

Sometimes, just a 5% magnification can mean the difference between a patient being able to drive or not. In other cases, using a prism to shift the light, along with the magnification, might help a patient make better use of their remaining vision.

This kit is useful for patients who have lost visual acuity due to various conditions, such as macular degeneration, Stargardt disease, cataracts, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy.

HOW DOES THE MAGNA-5 WORK?

5% MAGNIFICATION

When a patient can’t quite make out the 20/100 or 20/50 lines on an eye chart, the 5% magnification can provide a boost in acuity by making everything 1.05 times bigger - all while preserving their field of view. The anti-glare coating reduces reflections for clearer, more comfortable viewing.

4 DIOPTERS OF BASE DOWN/BASE UP PRISM

For patients who have lost some central vision—like those with macular degeneration—shifting the light slightly can help them use a healthier part of their retina. The 4 diopter prism moves the image just a bit off the damaged area. Even though the vision loss remains the same, this change can help with reading or recognizing faces by directing light away from the blind spot.

CONTRAST ENHANCING/GLARE REDUCING TINTS

The included 450 and 527 filters are two of our most popular filters generally associated with enhancing contrast and reducing glare for low vision patients.

They work by boosting the contrast between objects and their background, making details easier to see. These filters also reduce glare from bright lights or reflections, cutting down on discomfort.

You may also add more tints to your kit as you prefer. If you have tints in mind, give us a call to order – or go directly to Chadwick’s Tint Library to see our in-house library.

TIPS ON USING THE EVALUATION KIT

Office Testing Options:

Over Prescription Glasses: The patient can wear the Magna-5 fitovers over their regular glasses.

Like Their Own Glasses: The patient can also use the nosepads that come with the system to test them as standalone glasses. To do this, simply slide the nosepads onto the fitovers. Line up the small grooves on each side of the pad with the slots on the frame.

Suggested Procedure:

  1. Start by having the patient try each of the fitovers, choosing the
best combination of magnification and prism correction.
  2. See if adding low vision filters makes a difference.

For the best results, take the patient out of the exam chair. Let them move around the office, sit in the waiting room with reading materials, walk to their car and back. Testing the Magna-5 system in everyday settings helps you see how well it works for them.

Once you have a combination of magnification, prism correction, and filtering, you can order it for your patient in their current prescription.

HOW TO ORDER

The components of the Magna-5 system can be added to any prescription or ordered as a standalone pair of glasses or fitovers. Whatever your patient finds most beneficial, we can work with you to get it done.

To place an order, fill out the included order form and email or fax it to us. Please include any prescription information and the type of Magna-5 lens you prefer (in the “Magna-5” box). If adding a filter, please let us know the color and if you’d like it added to the lens or as a Chemistrie clip (at the bottom).

We also have a digital version of the Chadwick Optical order form available. If you have any questions about your order, please call or email Chadwick customer service.

CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

We suggest two cleaning options for the fitovers and clips:

OPTION 1:

Submerge in warm soapy water, and gently clean with your fingers or a soft sponge. Pat dry with a towel and use a clean microfiber cloth to remove any spots.

OPTION 2:

Lightly spray an alcohol-free, ammonia-free lens cleaner onto a clean microfiber cloth and gently wipe the entire surface of your fitovers and clips. Harsh cleaning products can damage the tinted Chemistrie clips.

Once you have wiped them down, either let them air dry or pat them dry, and finish by using another clean microfiber cloth to polish.
